IS IT A FOOT? A SHOE? OR BOTH? YOU MAY HAVE SPOTTED THIS ODD LOOKING FASHION AROUND TOWN. A SHOE WITH TOES! MADE TO REPLICATE THE HUMAN FOOT, AND EVEN BENEFIT THE WAY YOU WALK AROUND EVERY DAY. MADELEINE STROTH HAS THE STORY.

(VO)

WHEN YOUR SHOE LOOKS MORE LIKE A FOOT, IT ACTS MORE LIKE A FOOT. JUST ONE CREDO OF THE COMPANY VIBRAM THAT MANUFACTURES A SHOE THAT MAY HAVE YOU DOING A DOUBLE TAKE.

THEY’RE CALLED FIVE FINGERS, NAMED AFTER THEIR GLOVE-LIKE DESIGN, VIBRAM FIRST INTRODUCED THIS ALTERNATIVE SHOE LINE AS A WATER SHOE FOR KAYAKERS.

SINCE THEIR DEBUT, FIVE FINGERS HAVE GAINED POPLARITY AS A MINIMALIST RUNNING SHOE, PROMPTING THE EXPANSION OF STYLES AND TECHNOLOGY AVAILABLE IN THE FOOTWEAR.

LOCAL IOWA CITY BUSINESS, ACTIVE ENDEAVORS, HAS EXPERIENCED MUCH SUCCESS IN CARRYING THE FOOT-LIKE SHOES. AND EMPLOYEES LIKE JIM NIEMANN ARE ENTHUSIASTIC ABOUT THE PRODUCT.

(SOT/JIM NIEMANN INTERVIEW)

THESE SHOES WERE DESIGNED TO REPLICATE WHAT OUR FOOT ALREADY DOES. ALL THIS IS, IS ABOUT FIVE MILLIMETERS OF PROTECTION AGAINST HOT, COLD, AND SHARP OBJECTS.

(SOT/MADELEINE STANDUP)

ONE CONTRIBUTION TO THE GROWING TREND OF THIS ALTERNATIVE FOOTWEAR COULD BE THE SUCCESS OF THIS NATIONAL BEST SELLER, BORN TO RUN, THAT HIGHLIGHTS THE BENEFITS OF BAREFOOT RUNNING.

(SOT/JIM NIEMANN INTERVIEW)

OUR FEET ARE INCREDIBLY COMPLEX, AND HAVE ABOUT TWENTY-FIVE PERCENT OF THE BONES IN THE HUMAN BODY. SO WHEN WE PUT A BIG CUSION UNDERNEATH OUR FOOT, WE DON’T ALLOW OUR BODY TO USE ALL THOSE LITTLE MUSCLES AND TENDONS THAT WE SHOULD USE IF WE WERE BAREFOOT. OUR BODIES ARE BIOMECHANICALY DESIGNED TO BE BAREFOOT, SO THESE ARE JUST ALLOWING YOUR BODY TO WORK THE WAY IT WAS MADE TO.

(VO)

WITH FIVE FINGERS, IT’S ABOUT GETTING BACK TO BASICS, FOLLOWING THE MINIMALIST TREND.

VIBRAM FIVE FINGERS RETAIL FOR AROUND ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS. MADELEINE STROTH, DAILY IOWAN TV.

VIBRAM IS A PIONEER IN THIS MINIMALIST TECHNOLOGY AND FOR THE SAFETY OF IT’S CUSTOMERS, ENCOURAGES EDUCATION ABOUT COUNTERFEITERS. MORE INFORMATION IS AVAILABLE AT VIBRAMFIVEFINGERS.COM

(MADELEINE-VO)

IT WAS A BEAUTIFUL MORNING FOR A RACE ON SUNDAY AND OVER 100 PARTICIPANTS GATHERED IN LOWER CITY PARK TO RUN FOR A GREAT CAUSE.

(MADELEINE-SOT)

THE UNITED WAY 5K IS THE ANUAL HOMECOMING SWEEPSTAKES KICKOFF EVENT AT THE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA AND GREEKS WERE OUT IN FULL FORCE TRYING TO SNAG AN EARLY LEAD.

(MADELEINE-VO)

THE RACE IS A COMBINED EFFORT OF THE UI GREEK COMMUNITY AND HOMECOMING COUNCIL TO RAISE MONEY FOR THE UNITED WAY FOUNDATION.

(RACHEL-SOT)

WHAT’TS GREAT ABOUT IT IS IT BRINGS TOGETHER EVERYONE FROM THE IOWA CITY COMMUNITY.  SO IT’S A LOT OF STUDENTS, BOTH GREEK AND NON-AFFILIATED, AS WELL AS A BUNCH OF ADULTS AND NON-STUDENTS IN THE COMMUNITY.

(MADELEINE-VO)

BUT A MAJORITY OF PARTICIPANTS ARE GREEK AFFILIATED HELPING TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE ALMOST FOUR THOUSAND DOLLARS RAISED FOR UNITED WAY THIS YEAR.

(REED-SOT)

FOR HOMECOMING WEEK IT’S A CHANCE FOR THE GREEK COMMUNITY TO GIVE BACK, IT’S IMPORTANT FOR THE GREEK COMMUNITY TO SHOW WE’RE INVESTED IN THE COMMUNITY AND NOT JUST IN SHOWING SPIRIT FOR OUR HOUSE AND NOT JUST TRYING TO WIN THE WEEK OF HOMECOMING, BUT ACTUALLY DOING SOMETHING THAT’S PHILANTHROPIC AND GOOD FOR THE COMMUNITY. AND THAT’S WHY THIS RACE IS A GOOD CHANCE FOR GREEKS TO COME OUT AND SHOW THAT THEY CARE.

(MADELEINE-VO)

PROCEEDS TO THE UNITED WAY OF JOHNSON COUNTY WILL GO TOWARD IMPROVING EDUCATION, HEALTH, AND FINANCIAL SECURITY OF THOSE IN NEED.

A FULL LIST OF OTHER HOMECOMING EVENTS THIS WEEK IS AVAILABLE ONLINE AT HOMECOMING DOT U-IOWA DOT E-D-U.  MADELEINE STROTH, DAILY IOWAN TV.

STUDIES HAVE SUGGESTED THAT RISING TUITION COSTS FOR GRADUATE PROGRAMS MAY BE DETERRING STUDENTS AWAY FROM PURSUING FURTHER EDUCATION.  BUT AN INSIDE LOOK AT THE AMOUNT OF TIME A GRADUATE STUDENT MAY NEED TO DEDICATE TO THEIR WORK COULD OFFER ANOTHER REASON.

(DAN)

SO FOR EXAMPLE TODAY I WOKE UP ABOUT EIGHT O’CLOCK OR SO.  GOT READY ATE BREAKFAST.  CAUGHT THE 8:45 BUS, FROM CORALVILLE. CAME INTO WORK.  AND WORKED FROM 9 TO 12:30. MET WITH TARA MY BOSS, MY SUPERVISOR.  I MET WITH HER ONE ON ONE.  SENT OUT A LOT OF E-MAILS AND CHECKED SOME BOXES AND THINGS LIKE THAT.  AND THEN WENT OFF TO CLASS FOR THE VAST MAJORITY OF THE AFTERNOON.  I HAD CLASS FROM 12:30 TO 3:00 IS ONE CLASS AND THEN SHORTLY THERE AFTER IS OUR SEMINAR CLASS, AND THAT’S AN HOUR AND A HALF.  CAME BACK AT ABOUT 4:45ISH PM. AND I WILL PROBABLY FINISH UP A LITTLE MORE WORK STUFF. AND THEN GET STARTED ON HOMEWORK, I HAVE A PAPER THAT IS DUE, PREFERABLY ASAP.  AND I’LL PROBABLY TAKE THE 10:20 BUS MAYBE MAYBE EVEN THE LAST BUS WHICH WILL BE 11:20PM.  GET HOME RELAX FOR AN HOUR OR SOMETHING, AND THEN GO TO BED AND WAKE UP AND DO THE WHOLE THING ALL OVER.

(MADELEINE)

BETWEEN COMPLETING HIS DEGREE IN HIGHER EDUCATION STUDENT AFFAIRS, AND HIS ASSISTANTSHIP, PLANNING LEADERSHIP PROGRAMS FOR THE UI CAMPUS, DAN HAS TIME FOR LITTLE ELSE IN HIS SCHEDULE.  FORCING HIM TO SACRIFICE MANY PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS.

(DAN)

I WOULD LOVE TO SPEND MORE TIME WITH FRIENDS FROM CHURCH OR MY FIANCE OR PEOPLE THAT ARE NOT CONNECTED TO CLASS OR WORK OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT.  BUT I JUST SIMPLY DONT HAVE TIME FOR IT, AND SADLY IT’S ONE OF THE FIRST THINGS THAT GETS AXED.

(MADELEINE)

DAN SAYS A GOOD NIGHT MEANS LEAVING THE OFFICE AT 9PM, BUT HE’S CONFIDENT HIS TIME WILL PAY OFF.

(DAN)

IN THE END I AM FULFILLING ONE OF MY LIFETIME GOALS. AND THAT IS REALLY IMPORTANT TO ME.  AND TO GRADUATE WITH A MASTERS AND GO ON AND DO THE WORK THAT I HAVE A PASSION FOR HOPEFULLY FOR A VERY LONG TIME, I THINK IS WELL WORTH IT.  AND THERE ARE MANY PEOPLE IN THE WORLD THAT NEVER FIND THEIR PASSION OR OR ARENT ABLE TO AND THEY GO TO THEIR 9-5 JOB AND DONT LIKE IT, AND THATS THE ENTIRE REASON I’M HERRE IS TO GET A JOB THAT I REALLY LOVE.

(MADELEINE)

SO IT’S WORTH IT

(DAN)

ABSOLUTELY, YEAH.

(ANCHOR TAG)

DAN SAYS HIS BEST PIECE OF ADVICE FOR INCOMING GRADUATE STUDENTS IS TO ADVOCATE FOR YOURSELF AND FIND BALACE IN YOUR SCHOOL AND PERSONAL LIFE.
